“When should I replace my pool liner?”

This seems to be the question on every pool owner’s mind these days, especially those with older pools. It’s a great question, as your pool liner is what protects your pool’s foundation from serious water damage. This can affect the overall appearance of your pool, which can affect the entire atmosphere of your backyard.

There is no clear-cut answer to this question; people change their pool liners for a variety of reasons. Typically, however, in-ground pool liners last between 10 and 15 years, whereas above-ground pool liners average a five to 10 year lifespan.

There are a couple of reasons why you might change your pool liner. Some people choose to replace their pool liner for aesthetic reasons. If you’ve just moved into your home and you’re not a fan of the previous owner’s pool liner choice, you may opt to get a new liner. If your pool is old, your liner might be outdated or it may have faded. The sun’s harmful UV rays combined with the harsh chemicals in your pool will inevitably fade away the pattern on your pool liner over time.

Other pool owners replace their pool liner out of necessity. The same UV rays and chemicals that cause your liner to fade also strip away the plasticizers from your liner. Considering these plasticizers are what give your liner its resiliency, your liner becomes brittle and prone to damage when they are stripped away. When your liner is punctured, water can seep through and potentially cause cracks to form in the foundation of your pool. Some people try to fix these holes by having a diver cover them with patches. Unfortunately, these patches often shift when there is activity in your pool.

At Samson Pools, we recommend replacing your liner as soon as you detect a leak. That way, you can avoid more costly damage to your pool’s foundation.
